To pay tribute to the fighters and protestors of slavery in America, Joe Biden has approved to observe June 19 as the federal holiday. Notably, on Thursday, Mr. Biden signed the law and approved ‘Juneteenth,’ the end day of slavery in the United States. In the White House Event, the USA’s vice president, Kamal Harris, also marked and supported the Bill.
Kamala said, “As we establish Juneteenth as our newest national holiday, let us be clear about what happened on June 19, 1865, the day we call Juneteenth.” she explained how the slaved ones of Galveston, Texas, were the main pillars to be told that the Civil War had ended and they would be set free. She also stated, “The news was brought to them more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves in the Confederate states.”
The Bill was presented to Mr. Biden and is termed as ‘the Juneteenth Independence Day Act.’ However, about Fourteen Republicans were in Bill’s opposition in the House, while it passed by unanimous voice vote in the Senate. Harris said, “They learned that they were free. And they claimed their freedom, urging Americans to ‘learn from our history’ and ‘teach our children our history.'”
Mr. Joe Biden termed this day as the one of “profound weight and profound power.” He further also clarified, saying, “It was a day in which we remember the moral stain, the terrible toll that slavery took on the country, and continues to take. Great nations don’t ignore their most painful moments. We come to terms with the mistakes we’ve made, in order to remember them and begin to heal and grow stronger.”
The president also said that this day,’ Juneteenth,’ a national holiday, will make all the American citizens ‘feel the power of this day and learn from our history, and celebrate the progress, and grapple with the distance we’ve come, and the distance we have to travel.’
